New Strategy

With such a large project as building a boat like Gentoo, there is an accompanying large number of logistical considerations to under take.

For me, probably the biggest logistical question (after finding suitable planking timber) was where to build. Initially my intention was to live on Kaea and rent a building specifically for building. In the long term however it seemed more logical to buy a house with a big enough section to build it on, and this is what I have now done.

What this means though is that I now have much less disposable income and time to put into boat building, so I have had to come up with a new strategy. In the long term I think my new plans will work out better for me and will give me much better security and enjoyment during my retirement years. My current idea is to increase the time frame for all of my boat projects and re-prioritise my other projects, to bring them forward.

I have less definite timelines planned for Gentoo now. What I am planning for now though, is that once built, my life should be set up in such a way, that I can set out immediately in financial security in pretty much anyway I choose at the time, in Gentoo.

My current thinking is that the planking timber is still on order, so will be properly seasoned when I am ready to use it. I will still go ahead and arrange with Tom MacNaughton to start the re-design of the interior in mid August this year. When I do start building, I may only build the hull and deck initially, to the point of making it weather proof, then slowing down and allowing for the project to take up to 20-25 years from now to complete, while working on other projects and goals along side.

Hi Stuart.
I think it might be a good idea to plan making a really simple interior. Then you can rebuild each part when you need to. Either by using plywood or using cheap pine as per Toms suggestion.
After building Linnea, I know the best way for us to save, say a year, would have been to do everything exactly as Tom suggested it.

HI Matti,
I agree about doing it exactly the way Tom suggests doing it. I have discussed what I want to do with Tom, and his suggestion of redesigning the interior from scratch made sense to me. He would prefer to have the design finished before I start building, which is now quite likely.

Where I live is not the most suitable place for a boat like Crown jewel, so I am not in so much of a hurry to have it completed before I am ready to go travelling long term. Crown Jewel is the ultimate boat for me, but not necessarily the one on my first to be finished priority list. There are other possible, smaller boats which are suitable for this area which maybe in use during the time Gentoo is built.

It would be interesting if you can tell anything more about the new interior he is designing. If I remember right it was a bit like Shining moon.

It will be based on the interior of Shining Moon. I won't be commissioning the design until mid August though, so it will be some time after then before I will have any update on specifics.
